Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not just his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
